Summary:

X supports meme, is meme season really coming?

On April 22, X Product Lead and Solana advisor Nikita Bier this morning announced a new X feature, "Custom Timeline," which allows users to pin specific topics to the homepage tab and supports over 75 interest topics, helping users delve into niche content areas. In the promotional video, the meme topic section features the Flork image as its logo.

Currently, X Premium members using the iOS client can now add this customized timeline:

Due to the meme topic section featuring the Flork image as its logo, the Ethereum ecosystem's namesake meme coin saw a temporary 17x surge in value over half a day. According to GMGN market data, the FLORK market cap is currently reported at $8.4 million.

This meme-heavy feature launch comes at a time when the "space dog" Asteroid triggered a surge in ETH mainnet meme coin activity, coupled with the previous Cashtag feature allowing users to directly view stock and crypto data in the timeline, reigniting players' optimism:

Is this really going to be a meme season?

To answer this question, we need to take a comprehensive look at why X is introducing this feature.

Memes are Key to X

According to Amra & Elma's data analysis, by 2026, with X's brand overhaul and algorithmic revamp in full swing, meme-based posts now make up 66% of all content receiving over 100K impressions on the platform, with political and cultural meme topics seeing the fastest reshare rates, averaging 4200 reshares per virally spread post. Meme content holds a significant position on X, with about 60% of viral tweets being meme-based.

In fact, memes are not just crucial for X; meme content is vital for all social media platforms. According to a 2025 Forms.app report, over a million memes are shared every day just on Instagram. According to MemE Gen AI's report, 70% of TikTok users actively engage with meme-like video interactions.

The term "meme" has become an integral part of modern human life, especially among the younger generation, appearing and spreading across various social media and messaging platforms. It serves as both a daily pastime and a means of conveying emotions, culture, and even fashion.

Whoever stands at the top of the meme transmission chain holds the key to the youth. According to a report by meme-gen.ai, the majority of meme users are aged between 18 and 34, accounting for about 65% of all meme viewers.

In March of this year, X's Product Manager Nikita Bier criticized the dissemination of misinformation through a tweet that turned a gaming video into a war video, highlighting his emphasis on meme content:

“Stop posting gaming videos as if they are war videos. All our GPUs are busy detecting and flagging these fake videos when they could be used to display more interesting memes on the timeline.”

Memes can have political implications. When Trump survived an assassination attempt at his 2024 campaign rally, a photo of him, bloodied but defiantly raising his fist and shouting "Fight!" became the hottest meme on X, with supporters using it to symbolize resilience. This greatly reinforced Trump's image as a "fighter," rapidly boosting his approval ratings and becoming a core symbolic visual for his 2024 campaign.

Memes are one of the latest and most effective forms of brand marketing. At the end of March 2026, a truck traveling from Italy to Poland went missing along with approximately 12 tons (413,793 bars) of F1 Limited Edition KitKat chocolates.

Unexpectedly, this incident turned into one of the hottest memes on X, with a flurry of "find the culprit" meme creations. For example, the tweet below received over 137,000 likes and over 13,000 retweets.

Other brands also joined the "KitKat Heist" incident, engaging in cross-brand interaction through memes. For instance, Domino's UK account humorously announced that they would start selling KitKat pizzas, and the tweet received 226,000 likes and 19,000 retweets.

KitKat's official X account also seized the opportunity and launched the "Stolen KitKat Barcode Tracker," allowing users to scan their chocolate to check if it comes from a stolen batch, turning a stroke of misfortune from theft into interactive marketing.

Memes are essential, but what about meme coins? Is this a positive development?

Positive Development for Meme Coins?

Firstly, the custom timeline feature introduced in this X update actually includes a specific "Cryptocurrency" category.

This means that the meme category is not directly related to meme coins but is more inclined to show users high-quality meme content to keep them engaged.

After all, we are now accustomed to the quick browsing mode where a swipe takes us to the next piece of content, and X was not very intuitive in this aspect before. Users usually could only browse their interested content through searches to curate their feed. If there was a specific browsing preference, the search bar only offered three broad choices of trending, news, and sports.

Now, X has directly integrated this feature into the timeline. This means that as soon as users enter, they immediately see content revolving around the sections they are interested in, but in a more refined manner. For example, if you are just a basketball fan, you no longer need to scroll through a bunch of unrelated tweets in the generic "sports" section.

So, will the meme category on the timeline not benefit meme coins at all? Not quite, as it will still provide some positive outcomes.

This will especially benefit meme accounts that excel in creating meme images/videos and have been running meme pages for the long term. On my meme timeline, tweet content from meme coins like wojak/joe/neet has appeared:

However, these accounts have a common trait: they hardly ever directly mention their token ticker in the tweets. Instead, they focus on consistently producing high-quality meme content to attract views and followers, which eventually leads to conversions.

For this type of token, the emergence of a meme category timeline will provide them with a more direct traffic entrance, potentially increasing visitor/holder conversion rates.
