Reddit doesn't want to continue selling data to Google. Is Reddit's community worth $60 million?

Summary:

Reddit's negotiations with Google are reevaluating the content platform's AI ledger.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Reddit executives have discussed limiting Google's AI access to their content. Following this news, RDDT experienced a notable decline, with its closing price at $170.38 on the day, representing a decrease of approximately 8.3% from the previous close, with an intraday low corresponding to a decline of about 10.5%.

On the surface, this is about whether Reddit should continue selling data to Google. In 2024, the data licensing amount between Reddit and Google was reported by multiple media outlets to be around $60 million annually. Reddit's IPO prospectus disclosed that several data licensing arrangements signed in January 2024 had a total contract value of $203 million over 2 to 3 years, but the specific terms of the Google agreement were not publicly disclosed.

The stock price reaction indicates that investors are not just concerned about a single licensing fee. Google is both a data buyer for Reddit and an entry point for traffic. When Google uses AI to directly answer user queries, users may no longer click into Reddit. AI data licensing was once part of the post-IPO growth narrative, and if it undermines search traffic and ad exposure, the valuation thesis becomes more complex.

A Negotiation Report Hits Valuation

RDDT's decline is due to the market seeing that Reddit's two growth trajectories may be at odds with each other. Selling data brings in cash, but AI search could reduce traffic.

Previous search agreements were straightforward. Google crawled web pages, organized them into search results, and then directed users back to websites. Content providers monetized traffic, and Google retained users with better search results.

AI search has altered this division of labor. Google still needs data from content providers but may not necessarily redirect users back to the content providers. With users completing their reading on the search page, Google retains attention, and the clicks received by content providers may decrease.

Wells Fargo's concerns are also at play here. If Reddit were to end or renegotiate its Google AI content deal, short-term user growth, revenue, and valuation could come under pressure, while long-term user engagement could benefit. Reddit would find it difficult to easily give up its cash flow and cannot ignore search visibility.

Google Zero Rewrites Old Pact

The Verge's Editor-in-Chief Nilay Patel has long used "Google Zero" to describe this shift. It refers to Google Search no longer reliably sending traffic to third-party sites but providing answers within the search page itself.

This does not mean all websites will immediately see a drop in traffic, but rather that the old arrangement is falling apart. Content platforms previously allowed search engine crawlers because search brought users. Now, AI results may absorb the value of the content while reducing referral traffic.

Multiple third-party studies have pointed to the same trend: after AI summaries appear, click-through rates to external links decrease. Pew's 2025 study shows that search result pages with AI summaries lead to a lower likelihood of users clicking on external links. Organizations like Seer and Ahrefs have also made similar observations.

However, this does not directly imply that Reddit's traffic has been cannibalized. There is still disagreement about the impact on Reddit, with some studies finding that certain Reddit communities covered by Google AI Overviews have seen increases in comments and active users. What investors need to watch is AI search starting to become a valuation discount factor.

Reddit's value lies in the vast amount of authentic user discussions, especially around experiences, emotions, comparisons, and word-of-mouth. This type of content is precisely what large models and AI search engines need. Therefore, Reddit is more like a vital data mine for Google AI than a typical publisher.

The Implicit Costs Behind $60 Million

For Reddit, selling data is appealing. AI licensing revenue has high gross margins, strong predictability, and makes it easier for the market to understand the value of Reddit's data assets.

However, data revenue comes with implicit costs. It may front-load the value that should have been released through traffic, advertising, and user growth in the future.

If Google uses Reddit's content to generate answers and users stop clicking through to Reddit, Reddit loses more than just a page view. It could lose a registration, a post, an ad impression, and a community-building opportunity. For community platforms, traffic is the entry point for network effects.

This is also why an annual fee of about $60 million may seem significant but could still leave Reddit dissatisfied. The licensing fee buys Reddit the right to use Google's data, but it does not guarantee that Reddit will receive corresponding traffic. The more successful the AI product is, the lower the probability that users will click back to Reddit.

Therefore, the negotiation focus is most likely not just about a price increase. The more reasonable direction would involve dynamic pricing, citation displays, traffic redirection mechanisms, and a redefinition of the scope of AI usage. Reddit may be vying for a position in the search ecosystem, rather than just a higher licensing fee.

Repricing Is More Realistic Than Complete Rupture

Currently, it seems more like negotiation pressure rather than Reddit having already decided to part ways with Google.

Reddit still needs Google. Search visibility is crucial for user acquisition, and AI licensing revenue has become a key variable observed by the market regarding RDDT. Completely severing ties with Google would not only result in a loss of cash flow but also introduce uncertainty at the distribution level.

Google also needs Reddit. High-quality, real-time, community content with genuine user insights is not easily replaceable. In matters concerning consumer decisions, product experiences, software malfunctions, and life experiences, Reddit content often aligns more closely with the answers users are looking for.

The more likely outcome is a repricing of the agreement. Reddit is leveraging restricted AI usage rights as a bargaining chip to drive higher costs, clearer usage boundaries, or to require Google to provide more explicit citations and referral paths in AI responses.

For RDDT investors, the key is not whether the next agreement amount is higher than about $60 million annually, but whether the new terms can simultaneously demonstrate two things: Reddit can sell data at a higher price and can maintain user growth driven by search.

Advertising and Traffic Redirects Will Provide the Answers

This reassessment will ultimately come back to two verifiable variables: whether Reddit's ad revenue continues to grow strongly and if there is substantial pressure on user entry from search.

If future financial reports show that ad revenue and active users are still growing, and the new agreement includes higher prices or clearer AI usage arrangements, the market will interpret this decline as mere negotiation noise. AI data licensing will continue to be viewed as an incremental asset for Reddit.

However, if the growth in licensing revenue is accompanied by weaker search traffic and slower user growth, RDDT's valuation anchor will be harder to set. At that point, the market will not only inquire about how much Reddit's data is worth but will also question whether this money is being discounted for future traffic.

The negotiation between Reddit and Google is particularly interesting when looking at this new landscape. In the AI search era, content platforms are starting to recalculate "engagement" and "visibility" together on the same metric.
