Epic Earnings Report Leak After Hours Surge, Has Intel Really Turned the Corner This Time?

After Intel released its 2026 second-quarter financial report on July 23, the stock price surged significantly in after-hours trading. What triggered the market reaction was not a single number, but rather the revenue, data center performance, foundry losses, and third-quarter guidance all beating previous bearish expectations.


The financial report showed that Intel's second-quarter revenue was $16.1 billion, a 25% year-over-year increase, with non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.42. The company expects third-quarter revenue to be between $15.8 billion and $16.8 billion, with non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.38. On a GAAP basis, the company had a loss per share of $2.16 for the second quarter, with a net loss of approximately $11 billion, indicating that the profit improvement is not yet fully positive.


For investors, Intel has been seen as a laggard in the AI era in recent years. The GPU narrative belongs to NVIDIA, the advanced manufacturing narrative belongs to TSMC, and the server CPU faces pressure from AMD. This financial report has prompted the market to rethink: Can Intel still return to the AI infrastructure chain?


Three Threads Prompt Market Repricing


The difference this time is that Intel is no longer relying solely on a single business for its recovery. Data center revenue growth, narrowing foundry losses, and improved operating cash flow have jointly supported the after-hours reassessment.


The first thread is DCAI, which stands for Data Center and AI business, mainly including products like server CPUs. While the core acceleration capabilities of AI training and inference are handled by GPUs, data centers still require CPUs for general-purpose computing, scheduling, networking, and backend tasks.


In the second quarter, Intel's DCAI revenue was around $6.3 billion, a 59% year-over-year increase. This number does not directly prove that Intel has regained server market share from AMD, but it does show that the expansion of AI data centers is also driving server platform upgrades.


The second pillar is Foundry, which is Intel's chip manufacturing business. Intel not only produces chips for itself but also attempts to manufacture chips for external customers. The market has been most concerned in the past about the high investment in this business, slow customer validation, and unclear returns on advanced processes.


The financial report shows that Foundry's revenue in the second quarter was approximately $5.8 billion, a 31% year-on-year increase. Operating losses narrowed from $3.168 billion in the same period last year to $2.089 billion. Intel's segment revenue includes internal transactions, so the $5.8 billion cannot be directly interpreted as revenue from external foundry customers; it is more appropriate to view it as a signal of operational improvement.


DCAI Returns Intel to the AI Server Narrative


Intel's position in AI cannot be solely evaluated based on having the strongest GPU. Large AI data center purchases involve not only accelerator cards but also CPUs, networking, memory, storage, and power systems. As long as cloud providers continue to expand their AI clusters, the server platform will enter an upgrade cycle.


The 59% growth in DCAI indicates that Intel has not been completely marginalized in the AI infrastructure era. It can still derive incremental revenue from server demand expansion, prompting a reassessment of the company's position in the CPU cycle.


This assessment must still be approached with caution. The strong performance of DCAI may stem from AI spending expansion and may also include factors such as inventory replenishment, product cycles, and a low base. It demonstrates revenue growth, but it cannot solely prove a long-term reversal in the competitive landscape.


DCAI is more like a ticket to entry. Intel has returned to the AI data center table, but it will need to prove over the next several quarters that this is not just a short-term rebound amplified by industry prosperity.


Foundry Improvement Remains in Validation Period


The foundry business determines another layer of valuation. Whether Intel can transform from a traditional IDM—designing and manufacturing its own chips—into an external foundry option in the U.S. advanced manufacturing chain is one of the core variables the market is reassessing.


14A serves as a long-term technology milestone here. It can be understood as Intel's next-generation advanced manufacturing process aimed at serving higher-performance, lower-power chip demands. Management has expressed optimism about advanced processes and customer collaborations, linking it to the foundry transformation in the market's eyes.


However, 14A cannot be construed as having undergone large-scale commercial validation. The Intel Q2 report more clearly mentioned the risk production of 18A-P and high-volume production of Panther Lake, with 14A still primarily in a forward-looking and risk-disclosure context. At this stage, it is more appropriate to view it as a technological narrative milestone rather than a confirmed substantial external order.


Foundry Revenue Growth and Narrowing Losses indicate improving operational metrics. External customer interest or partnership clues suggest Intel has the opportunity to change the market perception of "no major customers willing to commit." However, from signals to scaled revenue, there are still challenges in terms of yield, delivery, cost, and customer ramp-up.


Higher Capital Expenditure Puts Pressure on Cash


One of the most tense aspects of this earnings report is the higher capital expenditure. According to Reuters, Intel has raised its 2026 capital expenditure outlook to over $20 billion and stated that the 2027 capital expenditure will be significantly higher than 2026. The more confident the management is, the more investors will scrutinize.


If the AI data center demand remains strong, DCAI growth continues, and Foundry losses keep narrowing, the increased capital expenditure will be seen by the market as locking in capacity ahead of time and securing the lead in advanced processes. For a company looking to regain its manufacturing leadership, failing to invest makes it challenging to rebuild competitiveness.


However, if the growth is merely a temporary rebound or if the adoption of advanced processes by customers is slower than expected, capital expenditure will once again become a valuation pressure. One of Intel's most confidence-damaging areas in the past has been the delays in advanced processes and the lackluster returns on massive investments.


A closer look at cash flow is also necessary. Intel's second-quarter operating cash flow was $7.006 billion, still positive after deducting gross capex, but the company's disclosed adjusted free cash flow was -$8.419 billion, primarily impacted by partner contributions and other factors. Broadly stating that "free cash flow is positive" would conceal the cash flow differences.


Capital Return Decision Determines Turning Point Quality


This earnings report has been enough to alter a previous verdict: Intel has not been completely left behind in the AI infrastructure era. Its data center business has reaccelerated, the foundry business's losses have narrowed, and the third-quarter guidance has given the market a reason to continue observing.


But what the market needs to verify is whether these improvements can withstand the capital expenditure cycle. An annual investment of over $20 billion indicates that Intel is not wagering on minor fixes but is establishing a foothold in advanced manufacturing, AI servers, and external foundry services simultaneously.


If subsequent earnings reports show that DCAI growth has not significantly slowed down, Foundry losses continue to narrow, and clues about advanced process customers translate into more definite production arrangements, Intel's valuation anchor may shift from a "cyclical rebound stock" to an "AI infrastructure participant."


Conversely, if cash continues to be consumed by capital expenditure, and foundry customers remain at a narrative stage, this post-earnings reassessment will be reclassified by the market as a quarterly rebound amplified by the AI cycle. Whether Intel is at a turning point ultimately depends on whether growth can support its manufacturing ambitions.
