Who is the Democratic lawmaker who shouted 'ban superintelligent AI,' causing a U.S. stock market crash?

Summary:

34-year-old Iranian-American congresswoman

On November 4, the day after the midterm election results came out, Yassamin Ansari, the U.S. Representative for Arizona's 3rd congressional district, posted a message of fewer than 100 words on X. This brief post quickly went viral within a day, simply because she said "ban superintelligent AI."

On November 5, U.S. stocks suffered their worst day since the pandemic, with about $3.2 trillion wiped off market value across the board; the four-year, AI-driven super bull market met an epic, broad-based selloff on November 5. Data centers, computing power, and electricity—the most crowded trades of the past few years—also saw concentrated liquidation.

The sentiment was obvious: Democrats want to restrict data centers, which is roughly tantamount to banning AI. But the source of the sentiment spread was traced to her one line: "ban superintelligent AI."

Of course, we cannot entirely say that the $3.2 trillion evaporation was caused by this lawmaker's one sentence, but the timing of when she said it, and the key node that ignited sentiment, had a crucial relationship with the U.S. stock market crash. Why did this sentence have such great energy?

Who is the person who posted

Ansari was born in Seattle on April 7, 1992, and is 34 this year.

She studied international relations at Stanford and graduated with honors in 2014, then received a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and completed an MPhil in International Relations and Politics at St John's College, Cambridge. From 2014 to 2021, she worked as a climate adviser in the Office of the UN Secretary-General, serving under both Ban Ki-moon and Guterres, and was involved in work related to the Paris Agreement. In 2021, she was elected to the Phoenix City Council, and from 2023 to 2024 she served as vice mayor. In 2024, she succeeded Ruben Gallego, who moved on to the Senate, and was elected to the House; she was sworn in in January 2025 and entered the 119th Congress.

In the 119th Congress, she has been reported as the youngest female lawmaker and the first Iranian-American Democratic congresswoman. Her political label is progressive, and her core issue is climate.

As of the end of October, she had primarily sponsored 33 bills, and only one actually became law: the bipartisan "Billion Dollar Boondoggle Act," which requires the White House Office of Management and Budget to report annually to Congress on federal projects that are over budget or seriously delayed. It passed the House in July, passed the Senate in September, and was signed by Trump. This was her first primarily sponsored bill to become law; its content is government transparency and has nothing to do with AI.

On AI issues, the action she truly led was spearheading a joint letter signed by more than 40 members of the House of Representatives, urging Trump to push for global AI rule negotiations and engage in dialogue with allies. This letter has no legal effect.

So at the AI regulatory level, judging from her previous experience, this congresswoman does not have much influence.

Moreover, banning superintelligent AI answers was not her original proposal.

September Was the Bill, November Is the Mood

On September 23, Senator Sanders introduced the "Ban Superintelligent AI Act" (S. 5493) in the Senate. The next day, Representative Greg Casar introduced the corresponding version (H.R. 10538) in the House.

In September, both chambers were still in Republican hands. This bill proposed by Democratic lawmakers faced great resistance to passage.

But November 4 was different. The Democrats had just won both the Senate and the House, and the new Congress's agenda became a focus of attention. Many people were asking the same question: after the new Congress convenes in January next year, what will the Democrats do first?

This Democratic congresswoman gave her own answer in the post: on the first day the Democrats hold power, they should pause the development of advanced AI, regulate what she called the "out-of-control industry," and ban superintelligent AI.

For market sentiment, the difference is already big enough.
