Summary:

Strategy sold $432 million worth of Bitcoin during the year to fund part of its dividend payments and preferred stock buybacks.

Bitcoin's rally has made Strategy's income statement look good again.

On October 29, the bitcoin treasury company released its third-quarter earnings report. The company posted net income of $19.53 billion, after consecutive losses in the first half of the year. The report also contained a less conspicuous figure: as of October 25, Strategy's BTC Yield year-to-date had turned negative.

It holds more bitcoin, yet bitcoin per share as defined by the company is lower than at the start of the year. Profit, holdings, and shareholders' share are telling three different stories.

Where does the profit come from?

According to Strategy's third-quarter report, the company recognized $20.91 billion in digital asset gains for the quarter. That figure is nearly equal to operating income, and explains why the income statement swung from a loss in the first half to a profit.

The two sets of bars in the chart cannot be added together. Digital asset gains and losses are already included in the company's operating results, while net income is the result after also factoring in other income, expenses, and taxes. The two are close together, showing that bitcoin valuation changes are enough to dominate a company's quarterly performance.

This volatility comes from accounting treatment. According to Strategy's second-quarter report, the company measures bitcoin at fair value and records value changes during the reporting period in current profit and loss. Rising coin prices can generate paper gains, and declines can bring losses into the income statement even if the company has not sold its entire holdings.

Meanwhile, revenue from software and other businesses in the third quarter was $125.4 million, down 3% year-over-year. Looking at revenue alongside digital asset gains, the former is more like the company's day-to-day operating income, while the latter reflects asset price changes; the two cannot be understood as the same way of making money.

Large net income also does not equal cash inflow of the same size. The company needs cash to pay preferred stock dividends and debt interest, while paper gains from rising bitcoin prices do not automatically turn into dollars in the account.

More coins are being bought, so why are per-share metrics falling?

As of October 25, Strategy held about 848,500 bitcoin, up 26% from the start of the year. This is the change in total holdings; shareholders also need to look at another denominator: shares the company has issued or may issue.

Strategy uses BTC Yield to measure the change in its Bitcoin holdings relative to its assumed diluted share count. Think of it as a growing cake: the cake gets bigger, but if the number of slices increases faster, each slice can still shrink.

The company's disclosed year-to-date BTC Yield fell from a positive figure at the time of its Q1 earnings report to −3.7% in the latest disclosure. This number indicates that Bitcoin per share, on the company's assumed diluted share basis, has declined since the start of the year. It does not mean Bitcoin itself fell by that much, nor is it equivalent to the investment return on MSTR stock. Strategy disclosed these two data points in its Q1 and Q3 earnings reports, respectively.

The metric also has limits. The company notes in its filings that BTC Yield does not fully account for the senior claims of debtholders and certain preferred stockholders. Raising capital to buy Bitcoin may boost the per-share Bitcoin metric while increasing claims or dividend obligations that rank ahead of common stock. No single metric can substitute for a full review of the balance sheet.

Beyond Paper Profits, Where Does the Cash Come From?

Strategy's financing tools are not limited to common stock. The company has issued multiple classes of preferred stock that require ongoing dividend payments. It is also repurchasing its floating-rate preferred stock STRC to support its trading price near the $100 per-share nominal amount.

According to its Q3 earnings report, as of October 25, the company had repurchased approximately $2.04 billion of STRC year-to-date. This figure includes shares repurchased but not yet settled and cannot be simply equated with all cash actually paid out as of that date.

At the same point in time, the company disclosed approximately $5.07 billion in USD assets, which by its own calculation covers about 3.4 years of preferred stock dividends and debt interest. This coverage period is an estimate based on the disclosure date; it does not mean future payment levels are fixed, nor does it cover all possible funding needs. In the chart, USD assets represent a balance, while STRC repurchases represent a year-to-date cumulative amount—the two cannot be added together.

The other side of the cash buffer is that the company has begun converting some of its Bitcoin into cash. The earnings report shows that Strategy sold approximately $432 million of Bitcoin year-to-date to pay a portion of preferred stock dividends and STRC repurchases. The company also retains the flexibility, as authorized by its board, to sell Bitcoin to replenish reserves, pay related expenses, or support repurchases.

This does not mean the company has stopped buying coins. According to the same financial report, as of the disclosure date, Strategy's year-to-date Bitcoin purchases amounted to approximately $14.33 billion. Buying and selling can occur simultaneously within the same year; the difference lies in the purpose and timing of the funds.

Strategy's quarterly income statement fluctuates with coin prices, while total coin holdings, coins per share, and available USD for payments each have their own denominators.
